JANUARY THEME “POWER UP”
Boys explore the science of energy through solar, electrical, and wind
power and how this energy is used in everyday life. They can explore different
ways to conserve energy and protect the world we live in. Work on the
Science or Weather belt loop and pin. Boys can invite friends to join in the
pinewood derby and discover the power behind hose little carts. What types of
things are powered up by the flip of a switch? A field trip to the local
waterworks or power plant might be part of the den’s monthly plan. Finish
the month with a real power packed pack meeting. They boys can power up by
being physically fit and working on the Physical Fitness belt loop and pin.
The January Pack meeting is on Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 at the BESIC.
It is sure to be a “powerful” meeting.
PINEWOOD DERBY
It is time to power up those pinewood derby cars that were handed out at
the December Pack meeting. The pinewood derby will be held Saturday, January
16 at the BESIC. Registration and weigh in begins at 1:00 p.m. with racing
beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Pinewood Derby is gearing up to put on a
wonderful race. The Derby Committee members are Jim Waltz, Dennis Leslie, Scott
White and Travis Wales. If you didn’t get a car because you weren’t at the
Pack meeting, contact Dennis Leslie. Dennis will also be holding some
pinewood derby workshops in his shop so you can make your car. Den leaders will
be contacting Dennis to set up a workshop for your den.
The PWD committee also decided to allow parents, siblings and leaders the
opportunity to build and race cars. Additional cars can be purchased for
$5. The rules provided in the car instructions will govern all races.
However, there will also be an outlaw race for adults where there are no rules
except the car can’t impede any other car. This event is surely to be fun.
Boys………START……..YOUR………ENGINES!!
RANK ADVANCEMENT
Congratulations to Jace Tener for earning his Bobcat award.
CHRISTMAS CAROLING
Thank you to everyone who went caroling. We shared the art of music. The
Tigers also made ornaments for residents of the senior citizen homes. A
thank you also to Ladina Miller who made arrangements for caroling.
CHRISTMAS CARDS
The Christmas cards made at the December pack meeting will be given to
Major Matt Twombly and Captain Terry Twombly to be sent to soldiers serving
our country. Your artwork and wishes are greatly appreciated.
SCOUT NIGHT AT BAKER
The annual Scout Night at the Baker Basketball game will be Thursday
February 4th. All Scouts in uniform get in free. The women’s game starts at
5:30. The men’s game starts at 7:30. This is a great way to earn your “
attend a game” requirement.
SUMMER CAMPING
It is time to start planning for summer camp. Both the Webelos and the
Bears have camp draws in January. Den leaders will be meeting with the boys and
parents to select a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices for camp dates. Webelos Camp
is for current Bears and 1st year Webelos. Bear camp is for current
Wolves. Day Camp will be June 7- June 11 and is for all Cub Scouts. We do need a
Pack Camp Coordinator who will work closely with the dens to ensure all
registration forms are turned in and everything is ready for all those camping
to have a great Cub Scout camping experience.
RE-REGISTERING
It is time to register again for 2010. All returning Scouts, except those
who joined for the first time this Fall, must re-register and pay their Pack
registration fee. The Pack registration fee for 2010 is $20. If boys also
want to receive the Boys Life magazine, the Registration fee is $32.
Registration sheets were handed out at the December Pack Meeting. Registration
fees are due December 28 to Pack Treasurer Lisa Hunkele. It generally costs
the Pack about $100 per boy per year for awards, patches, and Pack and Den
supplies.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Community service is one of the Scouting ideals. Each scout should
regularly perform community service. Caroling for our senior residents can be
considered a community service as is carrying the flag in the Maple Leaf
parade. The Pack as a whole should also perform community service throughout the
year. In order to help coordinate community service opportunities for dens
and the Pack, we are in need of a Community Service Coordinator. If you
have a gift and passion for discovering opportunities for community service and
desire to spread that passion to young Scouts, please let Committee Chair
David Simmons know. We need your help!
ASTRONOMY BELT LOOP WORKSHOP
If you attended the Astronomy Belt Loop Workshop and the telescope viewing
you may have earned the Astronomy Belt Loop. You will need to let your den
leader know if you have earned the belt loop.
CLASS “B” UNIFORMS
Class B Uniforms are still available for $5 for boys and parents. This is
an excellent way to identify our boys when we go to events like the
District Pinewood Derby, Day Camp, Bear Camp and Webelos Camp. Be sure to pick
yours up today. If you didn’t make the Pack Meeting, contact Jon Francis.
PACK FUNDRAISERS
Popcorn Sales – Thanks for all your help on the popcorn sales. If you haven
’t turned in money yet, please do so ASAP.
Wreath Sales – Cub Scouts sold a total of $2,659 of wreaths. Top Sellers
were #1 Zach Waltz $297, #2 Darius Slavin $279, and #3 Dakota Hancock $230.
Thanks to all 21 boys who sold wreaths. 10% of gross sales go to Scout’s
account for camping and other scouting activities.
DEN REPORTS
Webelos II Den 3 Meetings for January will be on the first, second and
third Thursdays after school at the Wessling house. We are working on our
Arrow of Light requirements.
Webelos I Den 8 We are finishing up our fitness pin and citizenship pin.
Bear Den 1 We continue to work on our Bear badge.
Bear Den 2 We continue to work towards our Bear badge. Because of
basketball practices we have temporarily changed our meeting date to the 2nd and
4th Mondays at the Waltz home.
Wolf Den 5 We have changed our meeting date to Tuesdays at the Scout
Cabin. The Wolf den is closing in on our Wolf badge and should finish it early
in 2010.
Tiger Den 4 – The Tiger Cubs have been busy this past month. Some boys
got their astronomy belt loops; almost all of the boys got their flag
football belt loop. Flag football is a no contact sport, but somehow we ended up
with two of the boys getting hurt. Nothing serious. Sterling and Henry both
went after a boys flag and ended up colliding. Sterling got a cut by his
eye and had to leave to get it cleaned up and taken care of, but he was soon
back to finish playing our game. We worked on many of our Tiger Cub
Requirements; which included a trip to the fire department. We are getting
closer to completing the badge! We should be done the end of January! Then we
start working on the 100 year badge! We've started working on our
citizenship belt loop and we will finish it up before Christmas. One of our requiremen
ts for the belt loop is a service project and we've decided to collect
clothes and toys and food for people who need it. The boys made ornaments and
cards to give to Vintage Park when we go caroling. They were really neat!
Jordan Shay and his adult partner, Leslie Huffman are in charge of the
December meetings and Jeffrey Smrha-Monroe and his adult partner, John Monroe,
will be in charge of January's meetings.
FULLY TRAINED LEADERS
Congratulations to Jon Francis and Janelle Johnston who attended Pelathe
District’s Training Extravaganza on December 5. They were provided Webelos
Den Leader Specific training and now are fully trained and have earned their
“Trained” patch.

SCOUT’N ABOUT
(Stories about Scouts by Scouts)
This section is for boys to write stories about their Scouting experiences
which they would like to share. It can be about something they did during
den meetings or Pack activities, including things like family camp, the
Pinewood Derby, or earning belt loops. There should be an achievement in every
rank so writing will help towards rank advancement.
