DECEMBER THEME “WORKS OF ART”
December is a time of celebration for giving. Invite friends in doing good
deeds and creating holiday magic through art. Cub Scouts can create
holiday decorations, gifts, and cards. Put their artwork on display in nursing
homes, churches, schools, the pack meeting, or the chartered organization. As
a Good Turn for America, make cards and ornaments to share with a local
retirement community, children’s hospital, or community center. Boys can disc
over different forms of art, write poems, attend a musical or performance
art show, or visit an art museum. Works of art can become gifts for family
members. In conjunction with these projects, work on the Academic belt loop
or pin in Art or Music.
The December Pack meeting is on Thursday, December 10 at 7:00 at the
BESIC. Please take note that this is earlier in the month than usual due to
Christmas.
ASTRONOMY BELT LOOP WORKSHOP
After the enormous success of this event the past four years, the
Astronomy Associates of Lawrence is planning another Cub Scout Astronomy Belt Loop
presentation on Friday, November 13 at 7:00 PM at 3139 Wescoe Hall on the
KU campus. The indoor portion of the presentation (about 1 hr) will be
followed by an observing session with club telescopes outside
of Wescoe Hall on "Wescoe Beach" (weather permitting). If anyone is
interested in going please let David Simmons know so we can RSVP with the total
number of people (including adults) that will attend so that we can make
sure we have enough handouts and telescopes to accommodate the group. A map
to the location, as well as other information about upcoming club events,
can be found at: _http://groups.ku.edu/~astronomy/pages/events.html_
(http://groups.ku.edu/~astronomy/pages/events.html) Remember that Cub Scouts can
earn Belt Loops each year, so even if you attended in the past, you are
invited to go again.
Webelos can use the Astronomy Belt Loop to help earn their Scientist
Activity Badge. If you were not at last year's event, ask around, I'm sure
you'll hear positive feedback. Also, there is no charge for attending.
Because there is a KU basketball game, attendees are requested to use the
parking lots near Memorial Stadium and walk to Wescoe Hall, as the parking to the
south and west of Wescoe will be reserved for basketball parking.
BROMELSICK CHRISTMAS PARTY
Every year the Bromelsick Foundation hosts a Christmas party for all
Douglas County Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4-Hers. The Christmas party this year
is Sunday, December 6 from 1:30 to 3:00 at Budig Hall on the KU Campus.
The party includes a Chemistry Magic Show and KU Youth Chorus. Tickets for
bags of candy will be handed out by your den leader. This promises to be very
fun for the whole family.
CLASS “B” UNIFORMS
Class B Uniforms are still available for $5 for boys and parents. This is
an excellent way to identify our boys when we go to events like the
Astronomy Belt Loop Workshop or the Bromelsick Christmas Party. Be sure to pick
yours up today. If you didn’t make the Pack Meeting, contact Jon Francis.
PACK FUNDRAISERS
Popcorn Sales – We had 19 boys sell popcorn with total sales of $4,970.
This is more than 110% of what we sold in 2008. Top seller was Gabriel
Baldwin with $1,300 followed by Carter Hall with $575 and Zach Waltz with $553.
All boys who sold popcorn will receive patches and prizes and 10% of their
sales placed in their individual Scout account for summer camps. Thanks for
your work boys (and parents) Money is due December 6 by 5:00 p.m. to
Popcorn Kernel Dave. Prizes will be handed out at the December 10 Pack Meeting
Wreath Sales –10% of gross sales go to Scout’s account for camping and
other scouting activities.
DEN REPORTS
Webelos II Den 3 Meetings for December will be on the first and third
Thursdays after school at the Wessling house. We can hardly wait until we are
Boy Scouts. We will be visiting Boys Scout units very soon.
Webelos I Den 8 Den 8 will meet November 19th at the Scout Cabin where we
are going to finish up our citizen badge. We have also been told that
Westar energy recently replaced some telephone poles and have cut them into
pieces so kids can build bird houses. Westar is donating 13 kits to our den.
This was all coordinated by Rob Schaffer—one of our scout parents. We
have not received the kits yet but have been told they will be delivered
soon. This will be a great project for us to do.
Bear Den 1 We continue to work on Bear Achievements.
Bear Den 2 is now meeting on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at the Waltz home
at 6:30. We went on a Black Jack Battlefield tour and saw where John Brown
fought the pro-slavers. We actually got to walk where the battle was fought
Wolf Den 5 We have a new Den Leader, Alice White. We continue to meet on
Sundays at the Scout Cabin.
Tiger Den 4 – We are about half way thru our Tiger Badge requirements. We
are working on the flag football belt loop and the citizenship belt loop.
We are also planning out the requirements for 100th year badge for Tiger
Cubs. We will be visiting the fire station next week for our Go See It this
month. Its planned for 5:00 p.m. next Tuesday before our Den Meeting. Our
Den meetings for December will be 1st and 15th.

SCOUT’N ABOUT
(Stories about Scouts by Scouts)
This section if for boys to write stories about their Scouting experiences
which they would like to share. It can be about something they did during
den meetings or Pack activities, including things like family camp and
Webelos Woods Weekend. There should be an achievement in every rank so writing
will help towards rank advancement.
I had a great time at Webelos camp this summer. I went with Peyton and
Timmy from my den. Some of my favorite things that we did were swimming, first
aid, and whittling. We got our whittling chip at camp, which was really
cool. One day it rained almost all day, at least there were no mosquitoes. It
was a light drizzle the whole day, but we still did activities in the
rain. We got to tye dye T-shirts that day, even though it was pretty muddy at
that place. That night we also had to cook our own dinner and try to start a
fire in the rain. We used my Frisbee to blow on the coals to get the fire
going. One of the other packs let us use their canopy so that we didn’t
have to get wet while we ate dinner. Some of the Den leaders had a belly flop
contest and were dressed in funny costumes. It was pretty funny. Webelos
camp was a lot of fun. – Cameron Johnston
