Dear all
Just a note to let everyone know about this weekend's camp out, which went very well. The event hosted over 3700 registered scouts and leaders from KS, OK, TX, AR, CO, IA, NE, and MO. Over 1000 additional folks arrived on Saturday to participate in the trading. Troop 65 took 20 youth, 5 junior leaders (18-21), and 7 leaders over 21. I can't tell you about everything that was traded, but there was a lot of it.
The weather was the mildest I've ever experienced at a Trappers (highs in low 50s on Saturday). The lows were in the 20s, but no one complained about being cold. Dylan Swain and Kenneth Graves, the troop's youngest scouts to attend, assured me that they had a great time and weren't too cold (a couple of pretty tough mountainmen, if you ask me). Both traded a lot and prepared Saturday night's dinner of dutch oven chicken, beef, and vegetable pot pies, which was some of the best food I have ever eaten on a scout camp out (so good I had to eat some of each). I would also like to thank Dan Graves for doing an excellent job as Senior Patrol Leader, Rick Deitz and the whole crew who went down ahead of the troop to set up the camp site, Mark Shuck and Virginia Wilson for stepping in to take care of the Tour Permit, the Gray-hair crews (Farmer, Lawrenz, Rome, and Slavin, and Kim Lisher for once again letting us use her 15-passenger van, which makes the trip so much easier on old gray-beards like me.
Be sure to ask your scout about the event and what they did. And remember, if you ever would like to attend a troop event, please do not hesitate to ask.
Yours in scouting,
John Richards
PS. And thanks to all the spouses who let their husbands spend the weekend away from home helping these wonderful scouts.
