Order of the Arrow/MOS Attire Workshop Greeting All!
PLEASE DESEMINATE TO ALL YOUR BOY SCOUTS IMMEDIATELY!
On March 28-29 we will hold an OA/MOS attire workshop in the Troop 55 Cabin. The workshop will begin at 9AM on Saturday the 28th and all scouts must depart by 10AM on Sunday the 29th. This will be a camp-in at the cabin. Although there is no cost for this event, pizza and soda will be provided for a cost of $5. We will work on costume items all day on Saturday. Native-American themed videos will be showing during the day and evening to help inspire costume designs and ideas. Other resource material will be available.
Materials for making costume items are not furnished but I will have a small supply of items that you may purchase for the same or lower cost I paid for them. This will primarily be choker bone pipe, beads and leather thong. Some feathers will be available as well material for making headbands. Again, these will be available on a first-come, first served basis and at my cost or below. If you want to purchase items, it’s recommended that you bring about $8-10 for a real bone bead choker and $3-4 for feather(s) and headband thong. A sewing machine will be available for making aprons but you must furnish your own material or leather. You should ask your troop leadership for suggestions on apron materials or you may email me for suggestions.
I will need adult assistance for this event both to assist in crafting and in supervision. All should bring a bedroll, a sack lunch for Saturday and any snacks you might want for the evening other than pizza and pop. If you don’t want pizza for supper, bring your own food. We will not allow scouts to leave the cabin for lunch or dinner without a parent.
IMPORTANT!!!: At this event, we will cast and rehearse the Pelathe District Order of the Arrow Callout Ceremony which will be presented at Spring Camporee. I will be posting more information on the ceremony later but I STYRONGLY suggest that you keep the results of your OA Elections confidential, known only to your Scoutmaster and Committee Chair until the ceremony. This makes for great suspense among the scouts and heightens the anticipation of the ceremony. BE SURE TO GET YOUR OA ELECTIONS SCHEDULED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!
SCOUTMASTERS AND COMMITTEE CHAIRS: Please get this information to your scouts and leaders as soon as possible and email me to suggest whether or not your boys will be participating so that I can be prepared with materials. Also let me know if you can provide leadership for this event.
SUGGESTIONS FOR OBTAINING MATERIALS:
Google and visit the websites of:
Crazy Crow Trading Post (very fast shipping)
or
Grey Owl Crafts
FOR DEERSKIN for aprons, I suggest the Leather Factory store in WICHITA.....316-942-7773 These people are great to work with and can guide you over the phone to some good deals on leather for aprons. Leather, however, is not cheap and a leather apron is probably going to run you 30 bucks minimum. They often have good deals on closeout deerskin or pigskin however. They also have a national website but I prefer dealing with the Wichita folks over the phone.
